Now the Coffin Dodger is done, I can crack on with this beastie, something I've wanted to build for years. I am going to scratch some front frame rails, to mount the straight axle and '57 Ford FI engine. There will most likely be a Moon tank hanging out front, and a full race interior . I have already jacked up the rear suspension, but still need to radius the rear arches to clear the slicks. Now do I leave the body stock, or kustomise it?

If I put my pedantic vintage drag race hat on I'd say that a serious race car would run a stock body (although how serious is a Merc drag car anyway?) whereas a "run what you brung" car could be modified to your heart's content.
Gotta love loopy drag cars!

I say leave it stock bodied, just remove the trim

This will never be a serious race car, just gonna have some fun with it.

I have made some progress with the Merc now. Started by chopping off the front of the chassis, to replace it with rectangular section to support the parallel leaf springs. Now with the straight axle in place at the front, it takes on a proper gasser stance. I have also opened up the rear wheel wells to clear the slicks, though these will need more work yet.

Chassis is just about sorted now. I have built the engine mounts, though they are now for a blown and injected Cadillac motor (from the AMT '59 El Camino kit) as this old barge will need all the help it can get going down the track!

Just a quick update, after what seems like months of inactivity! I have painted the chassis, glued the front axle in place, glued the tunnelled headlamp buckets in place and shortened the trim down the side. Busy afternoon!

Made some progress with the engine and interior, and the body is pretty much ready for primer. The rollcage is from the AMT 49 Ford kit, and fits quite well.

A roll cage? In a 49 Merc? Surely the car's strong enough on its own to cope with being rolled!

Quick update. The body is now painted gloss (??) white ready for some pearl and lace work. Also painted the rear wheels gold. Not much else done.

I'm thinking "Fool's Gold" cos you'd have to be a fool to try to race this thing!

OK, this has sat gathering dust for far too long. Now I have finished the '48 Ford and Mustang (quick build, pics soon), I'm gonna crack on and finish this THING! So far I have swapped the rear wheels for chrome Cragars, painted some more of the engine, and glued the blower together, so some progress.
