I use Halfords plastic primer and then anything over it with no problems (Acrylic - any brand, enamel). Far cheaper than say Tamiya primer but not as fine a surface.

I wouldn't have thought that would cause any problems, primers tend to gas out pretty quickly so there shouldn't any reaction with whatever you out on top.
However, if you're planning on using a clear coat then I'd stick to the same brand throughout. If the colour coat isn't 100% compatible with the clear coat then sooner or later something nasty will happen!

I use Hycoat red primer (its smoother than the white & grey) it takes any colour over the top, including white, if your spraying indoors, then a large cardboard box works well with an extractor fan with flexi hose to outside, very reasonable from tool station online & the box should be free
I use 2 pack car paints for finishing, but not recomended for use indoors as the vapour is toxic, they gas off quick & do not bloom when used outside
